Internships & Social Impact Projects
The MIM allows for students to gain up to 10 months of practical experience through a mandatory internship (duration: 3-6 months) and the participation in the Social Impact Project (SIP). The SIP enables students to put relevant business skills to use in a non-profit organization working on social challenges in a developing country.
In addition, the ESMT Career Services Team helps students to connect with employers and advance their professional development through a series of activities:
- ESMT Career Fair
- Company visits and presentations
- Soft skills trainings and workshops
- CV Book and many more.
Visit the Career Services pages for more information.
ESMT's Master in Management program integrates up to two internships into the curriculum.
MIM students earn credits towards the Master's degree by doing a mandatory internship between April and September. The internship has a minimum duration of 12 weeks, but most students choose to do a longer internship of up to six months. ESMT's Career Services team helps students to find the right opportunity and prepare professional and convincing applications for their chosen positions. Most students find their internships through a combination of engagement with ESMT's partners and open applications to companies of their choice.
Germany is the most popular location for internships; however, students are allowed to do the internship anywhere in the world. Other locations in the past included the Netherlands, Japan, Turkey, Switzerland, France, South Korea, and Kenya.
Many students, especially after returning for the second year of their studies, will take up a working student position of up to 20 hours per week to continue their professional development and gain further practical experience.

The Social Impact Project
The Social Impact Project is a five-week project during the second year of the Master in Management program. It offers students the opportunity to serve as an economic or management consultant for an organization with specific social impact objectives, such as a non-profit organization, a CSR department, a social entrepreneurship venture, or a social impact project of a for-profit organization.
As consultants in these Social Impact Projects, MIM students are expected to apply the tools from courses such as management science, economics, finance, marketing, strategy and organizational behavior to guide the decision-making process and increase the likelihood of achieving the desired social impact.
During the project, students develop skills such as leadership, problem-solving, and project management, which are difficult to acquire without guided practice. Unique to ESMT, MIM students are required to use these skills to benefit society as a whole, which is a cornerstone of ESMT’s mission. The Social Impact Project is therefore applied fieldwork with the goal of developing well-rounded, socially conscious graduates.
Students are welcome to travel to the project destinations to gain onsite experience and consult directly with the social ventures.
